ABB TB840A Description

The S800 I/O is a comprehensive, distributed, and modular process I/O system designed 

for seamless communication with parent controllers and PLCs via industry-standard 

field buses. The TB840 ModuleBus Modem provides a fiber optic interface to the 

Optical ModuleBus, enabling reliable and high-speed data transmission.

The TB840A version is specifically used in redundant configurations, where each 

module is connected to separate optical ModuleBus lines, while still being connected 

to the same electrical ModuleBus. This setup ensures higher reliability and fault tolerance.

The ModuleBus Modem features both electrical and optical ModuleBus interfaces, 

which are logically the same bus. The electrical ModuleBus can support a maximum 

of 12 I/O modules, while the fiber optic ModuleBus can connect up to seven 

clusters, allowing for flexible and scalable system expansion. The fiber optic 

interface is ideal for the local distribution of I/O clusters, especially in cases where 

more than 12 I/O modules are needed within a single I/O station.

This architecture allows the S800 I/O system to be efficiently configured for 

various industrial automation needs, with robust redundancy options and 

high-capacity communication for large-scale applications.
